I don't personally think it's to imply that he's the cause of the phenomenon. Yeah, I thought for for the nosebleed thing would end up being like, some sort of cancer rapidly growing due to the time warp, but then nothing ever came of it. How the hell does that make any sense? Presumably, he was younger when he arrived, maybe even a child/toddler the night before? So if the point is to not provide explanation, why introduce the wife from Algeria? But why/how did she actually drown? Is there supposed to be a message here? And the biggest problem of all- when trying to escape with the dark-haired girl, he says that he has a wife in Algeria. People suspect him of being the murderer- and clearly, since the first corpse is young, she actually did drown rather than die of old age. ![]() More confusing than Jose however is the first character that gets introduced, who begins the story already on the beach. My main issue with the story is that they are purposefully not explaining the mystery of what's going on- apparently there was a different ending originally, but they changed it because they didn't want to explain the horrifying aging phenomenon. I've read that there can be some kind of biblical interpretation here, since "Jose" is similar to Joseph, and something to do with the fact that he's related to the hotelier? I don't know, I think it's a bit of a reach. I too was very confused by "Jose" getting shot down while trying to reach them. I'm very curious to see what elements of the story will be omitted by Shamylan in the movie and which will be expanded on. I think there is a very intriguing premise here, but something about the execution just felt really off to me. I'd like to chime in on this as well as I just burned through it in the last hour.
